BBC Birmingham looks to a new digital future

We've had the following press release from our friends and colleagues at the BBC-

BBC Birmingham looks to a new digital future

BBC Director-General Tony Hall today returned to Birmingham to outline the start of a new creative vision for the BBC in the Midlands.
He spoke with the whole team in the Mailbox, the BBC's base in Birmingham, and said “I want to make Birmingham a really exciting and important part of what we do. This is just the start - but make no mistake, if you’re interested in new skills and digital innovation, this is the place to be.”
Outlining his vision, Tony Hall talked about some of the plans:
  • The teams who deliver entry level training schemes, talent and skills development, including inductions, will be based in Birmingham. BBC apprenticeships and traineeships will also be run from Birmingham
  • The BBC has agreed in principle with the Arts Council, England that Birmingham will become the new home for The Space, their pioneering digital arts partnership. Teams from Birmingham will also make a substantial contribution to the BBC’s Shakespeare season in 2016
  • A new digital innovation team will be developed in Birmingham, working with the Creative City Partnership and local talent to tell stories differently and produce content in a whole new way. This is part of the BBC’s wider strategy to engage younger, more diverse audiences
  • The BBC’s Outreach and Corporate Social Responsibility team, who work with local communities, educating and inspiring people right across the country, will also be moving to Birmingham
Tony Hall also outlined how the Mailbox would become an open skills and development space for people and his overall aim to build on the city's growing reputation for cutting edge digital work, its diverse talent pool, vibrant young audiences, strong arts scene and to celebrate Birmingham’s rich potential and ambitions for the future.

Tommy Nagra, newly appointed Head of Business Development for BBC Birmingham, will work with new Head of Regional and Local Programmes, David Jennings, and internal BBC staff and external partners to deliver the changes.

Peter Salmon, Director BBC North and tasked by Tony Hall to lead this project, said "This is the first phase of our plans for the BBC in Birmingham. We’re building a stronger BBC in the city and today’s announcements are the first steps in that journey. We will continue to work with Birmingham; the wider region and the wider BBC to increase our activity here."

These changes will take place over the next two years - and will bring around 80 jobs and £23.5m additional activity to the city over a three-year period.

Funding Opportunity - Digital Makers Fund

We received an email about this fantastic fund earlier this week, please feel free to circulate around your networks.
Digital Makers Fund - Opens 18 September 2013, closes 14 November 2013

Nesta and Nominet Trust (proud supporters of Make Things Do Stuff) are pleased to announce a second open call for ideas to significantly increase the number of young people who participate in digital making activities.

We want digital making to go mainstream. We want making with technology to become as accessible an activity as making music or making food. Ubiquity is a long way off, but we want to support initiatives that can take us closer to that goal.

The second call is backed by a fund of £250,000 and we expect to make a small number of grants between £20,000 and £50,000. Alongside the grant a package of tailored support will be offered; this includes expert advice and mentoring and access to Nesta and Nominet Trust's expertise, networks and event space

Please note: If you want to apply, a pre-requisite is attending a workshop or webchat – so you can ask questions and get a better understanding on the Fund. They’re holding a workshop in Birmingham on Ted 23 October (12:30-2pm, lunch included) at Fazley Studios - https://digitalmakersfund-23oct.eventbrite.co.uk/

Event news - The History of Public Address

Sound system evolution through the 20th and early 21st centuries… and beyond???

Speaker: Jim Cousins www.soundimprovementservices.com

Join Creative Networks to hear Jim talk about his approach to sound system design; he’ll be inviting discussion on current audio quality, potential hearing damage and the question “where do we go from here…?”

THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2013, 5.45PM UNTIL 8.45PM - WWW.CREATIVENETWORKSONLINE.COM
BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY, MILLENNIUM POINT, CURZON STREET, BIRMINGHAM B4 7XG

INCLUDING THE MUSIC NETWORK 4PM UNTIL 5.30PM - WWW.BIRMINGHAMMUSICNETWORK.COM
AND BIRMINGHAM SCREEN IMAGE NETWORK 4PM UNTIL 5.30PM – www.birminghamscreenimagenetwork.wordpress.com

Jim’s early career was as an electronics engineer working in the aircraft and medical industries. He then joined a five-year hearing and speech project which led to employment in the pro-audio world, designing live sound mixing consoles and bespoke recording consoles for Midas Audio Systems. Manufacturing consoles for artists like Frank Zappa and designing theatre systems for the musicals Evita and Cats, he also worked with Pink Floyd for the original production of The Wall.

Frustrated that live sound system designs didn't keep up with the superb audio fidelity of the analogue mixing consoles at that time, Jim next became a freelance consultant working on a wide range of sound systems and, of course, very large scale outdoor events. His largest event, dubbed Popestock, was in 2000 with a single audience of over two million people and the furthest person being a mile from the stage. That event led to a nine-year stint with Martin Audio, originally as senior projects engineer and then as product manager.
Jim set up Sound Improvement Services in 2010, providing sound system and acoustical consultancy plus bespoke loudspeaker design for specialist use. He also writes technical articles, user-guides and training material for manufacturers, teaches Smaart v7 (audio measurement) and presents one-day classes on bass system control and room acoustics.

Creative Networks brings together all parties involved in screen and sound media in the West Midlands, promoting both successful business development and collaboration.

The Tales of Shakespuss -DM Opportunity

We've just heard about an exciting new project about a cat called 'William Shakespuss' The basic premise of the project is to bring the elements of Shakespeare to children as soon as they can sit up and look at pictures.
Digital Media Opportunities

The Tales of Shakespuss have a number of facets, including a stage show which is presently the element which relates to the crowd-funding indicated on the website at present www.shakespuss.com.  For digital media businesses, the interesting element will be the creation of the animation of the Tales.  They have secured the wonderful talents of Patricia Quinn (AKA Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show), whose appearances include acting with the RSC and a great many roles including children's roles such as The Box of Delights in the mid 80s.  She is to be the voice of Shakespuss, and no doubt they'll have other exciting actors for the many colourful characters which are members of the Shakespuss troupe.

Support on any level for Shakespuss will have a tangible supporting effect on every aspect of the project, and they certainly hope they can enjoy the talents of the many professionals working within the animation and support industries in and around the Midlands.

Shakespuss and Shakespeare naturally share the same home of Stratford upon Avon, the creator of Shakespuss, Melissa Mailer-Yates, says she was born in Yardley, and keeping the creative side within the Midlands area is very important to the Shakespuss project. Support on any level would be gratefully received, particularly as they are currently seeking the financial backing in order to achieve what will no doubt become a worldwide phenomenon.

We at Digital Media Businesses wish Melissa and William Shakespuss every success and look forward to telling you about any creative opportunities that arise during the project

You can watch a video about the project on the website www.shakespuss.com

'Up' your street smarts with Smart Streets - event

Designing Smart Streets – InfoLab21 event 25 June Lancaster University

Digital Birmingham is leading the Smart Cities agenda on behalf of Birmingham City Council. It is working with many of its strategic partners to ensure that we can maximise the city assets and resources and accelerate the release of data so that it can be used by businesses to create new applications, products and solutions to help the city achieve its strategic outcomes.   The potential benefits of Public Service Information have been estimated by Deloitte at £1.8bn of direct value with wider social and economic benefits raising it to £6.8bn.  The release of real time information by Transport for London has enabled new apps to be developed, promoting public usage and generating business opportunities.

The InfoLab21 event on 25 June at Lancaster University provides a great opportunity for businesses and organisations who work in app development or who have an interest in open Data to develop creative solutions for highways / street maintenance challenges and work on a competition entry for part of a £60K prize fund. The project is a TSB funded collaboration and will bring together project partners Carillion, Balfour Beatty and Amey and the small business community to explore how our highways can be digitally enhanced/enabled and, more importantly, what data might that might provide and how a range of stakeholders, particularly smaller businesses, can access the data and make money from it.
