Fulldome, the emerging 360° digital cinema – Creative Networks at Thinktank’s Planetarium

Historically domed theatres have served as planetariums for exploring the night sky. Using a number of projectors to fill the dome, modern digital planetariums also fly audiences across the Universe, transforming the domed theatre into a powerful tool for subjects other than astronomy. Of the 3,500 domed theatres in the world, one in four is now digital.

Fulldome, the 360° digital medium, is much more than this. It has opened up endless creative possibilities for artists and filmmakers. The digital dome immerses the viewer in high-resolution video and surround sound. Yet fulldome remains new to the world of cinema and fine arts. With another three to four digital domes opening worldwide each month, there are increasing opportunities for media artists to create completely new, interactive immersive experiences. Filmmakers now have another cinematographic language with which to invent. “A dome is such a great shape to project a movie on.I think one day people will have domes in their homes. They’re magical” - David Lynch, The Art Newspaper, 2008

Thinktank Planetarium is the UK’s first purpose-built digital dome (opened 2006), the only one actively exploring the medium, and with local artists invented Fulldome Dance in 2007. Recently Dome Club nights were launched www.domeclub.co.uk to work with content providers as Arts Council England funding supports such projects. After the usual registration and complimentary food and refreshment starting at 6pm at Birmingham City University, Creative Networks are delighted to be the Dome Club’s guests at 7pm for an enthralling evening of light and sound shows and a foretaste of future possibilities for collaboration.
